Day 76 - Great Guana Cay - Pig Roast on the Beach

The day started very early for us.  Betsy had told us about a website that tracks rocket launches at Cape Canaveral.  She thought we might be able to see it from the Bahamas so we were up at 4:40 am to check it out.  We saw nothing.  Randy went up to the clubhouse so he could check a website for the launch time and found that it was set for 5:45 am.  We went back to bed for an hour.  At 5:45 am we were up again, but again did not see anything in the sky.  There is another launch on March 25th and we may actually be in Port Canaveral then, so we have another chance to see a rocket blast off.

At 8:15 am each day there is a radio broadcast in the Abacos that gives the weather forecast, wave conditions, community announcements, invitations, arrivals to the area, and departures.  We haven’t always been able to hear much of it clearly, but we picked up most of it that day.  Captain Randy checked in and announced Kristin Says as a new arrival and that we were from Chicago, doing the Great Loop.  The shows are recorded and can be heard at Cruisers.net.

It was very warm and the winds were calm when we walked over to Nippers for the pig roast.  On the way, there is a tree marked "poison wood, don't touch" but we're not sure why.  There was a good crowd with a variety of ages, families, couples, and singles. The buffet included barbecued pork, roast pork, macaroni and cheese, corn, cole slaw, peas and rice, bread pudding, and pineapple.  We ate more than we should have and enjoyed it all.

After the pig roast, we waded into the surf and thought about snorkeling but heard that the close coral was dead and you had to go out pretty far to see live coral and fish.  It was further than we wanted to go, so after a walk we went back to the boat.

That evening we had snacks and drinks at the marina restaurant and again watched the sunset.  The wind had picked back up and the boat was rocking and rolling until midnight or so, when the wind died down again.  We watched The Life of Pi on our Direct TV and felt like we were in the life raft as we rode the waves in the harbor.
