Day 73 - A Lazy Day on Green Turtle Cay

The wind continued to blow through the night and we had some rain.  At least the harbor here at the Green Turtle Club is protected and though we were moving, we weren’t rocking and I had no trouble sleeping (although the hard rain woke me up).  I started the day catching up on writing blog entries and Captain Randy researched the waters, waves and weather.  Then we took our burgee back to the Tipsy Turtle, borrowed a step ladder and proudly hung it in the rafters of the bar.  Captain Randy printed the name of the yacht club across the top and signed our names to it.

Mid-morning we hopped into our golf cart and drove to the other major resort and marina in White Sound, the Bluff House.  This marina has no finger piers at all, so unless you back in it is very difficult to get on and off the boat.

We drove from Bluff House back to New Plymouth.  We found a few pink concrete buildings that comprised “Ye Olde Gaol” (the old jail).  I was surprised at the sight when I lifted the green shutter off one of the windows!  The jail was not a place I would like to spend time.  The doors were open and the jail appeared to be used as storage these days.  Christmas decorations were strewn around the yard.

We stopped back into Sid’s Grocery for some fresh Bahamian bread.  Then we waited for the Albert Lowe Museum to open after the lunch break.  It was supposed to open again at 1 pm, but it was 1:30 pm before the attendant appeared.  He apologized and told us that he was caught in line at the bank.  The local bank is only open on Thursdays, so we could understand the delay.  The museum had a lot of pictures and a few model boats built by Albert Lowe who was a boat builder.  The museum also contained pictures and other artifacts concerning New Plymouth’s history.  One of the interesting things we learned was that after a bad hurricane in 1932 some of the residents relocated to Key West, Florida, by dismantling their homes and rebuilding them in Key West.  New Plymouth and Key West have been “Sister Cities” since then.

After the museum we drove back to the marina and returned the golf cart.  We took our laptops and phones up to the clubhouse to read our email as the internet did not work on the dock.  We had dinner on the boat and downloaded pictures to the laptop so that we can update our blog before we leave for our next port.
