On
an early flight again, we left the never-ending Chicago winter for West Palm
Beach. I prayed that I would not need to
wear my snow boots and heavy jacket again until at least December. I can’t believe I was still wearing
them! Thank goodness the sun was shining
and the temperature was around 70 when we got to Florida and could shed our
jackets. All we could do was laugh and
shake our heads when the locals complained about how cold it was going to get
that night – mid-50s. We had a rental
car reserved to drive back to Betsy’s house in Port Salerno as we needed to
stock up on groceries and get a few things from West Marine.
After
we unloaded and put everything away on the boat we had a cocktail with Betsy
and went out for dinner. Betsy’s first
recommendation was a very small restaurant near her house, but it was very
crowded with a long wait. Her next
choice was a seafood restaurant called Fresh Catch. We were able to get seats at the bar and
ordered drinks and raw oysters that were shucked right there at the bar. It was not long until our table was
ready. Betsy had sea scallops, Randy had
lobster scampi, and I had a “seafood pot” of mussels, clams and shrimp with
garlic bread. We had not had fresh seafood
in 2 weeks and thoroughly enjoyed our food.
Our
plan was to go to the Bahamas the next day, but the north winds were causing
high waves in the Gulf Stream. It looked
like it might be a couple more days before we could cross over, so we had to think
about some other plans. Captain Randy
had already been thinking about that.
Originally from the St. Louis area, Randy is a huge Cardinals fan. They just happen to do their spring training
in Jupiter, Florida. He went on line to get
tickets to Saturday’s game, but they were sold out. So we planned to drive down early the next
day to see if we could get ahold of some near the Roger Dean Stadium where the
Cardinals play.
