Day 74 - Island Hopping

We had hoped to move the boat to Treasure Cay today, but after checking the weather and wave conditions, we thought the better of it.  Our route would require us to go out on the ocean for several miles in 5-7 foot waves.  The Green Turtle Ferry was running to Treasure Cay so we took that over instead.  The ferry’s route avoids the oven passage by crossing over some shallow sand bars that Kristin Says cannot.  The only problem was that the ferry dock was near the airport and the marina is about 7 miles the opposite way.  Several cabs were waiting to take us wherever we wanted to go, so it worked out all right.

Treasure Cay is larger than Green Turtle Cay and has several miles of the most beautiful beaches I had ever seen.  The sand was soft, fine and pure white.  The cab dropped us at the Treasure Cay Resort and Marina and we walked the marina and pool area, then hit the few shops.  There was a decent size grocery store but boy was it expensive! Many items were 2 ½ to 3 times more than in the US.

We crossed the main road and walked a couple blocks to that gorgeous beach.  It was not ideal beach weather due to the wind, but we walked a little anyway.  We had lunch in the Coco Beach Bar and looked out at the water.  We had grouper fingers and a grouper wrap sandwich.  The grouper is so fresh and delicious in the Bahamas I could eat it every day (and practically have).

Besides 2 large resorts and a golf course, there is not much else on Treasure Cay.  We took another walk on the beach then went back to the resort office to get a cab back to the ferry dock.  Inside the office there was a golden lab with tags, a leash and a ball in his mouth.  At first we thought he belonged to a guy sitting at the desk, but it turned out that he had only agreed to watch it for a few minutes while the owner went to the restroom.  Well, the owner jumped into a dinghy and went out to his boat and had not come back!  The hotel staff called and left a message for the owner as his number was on the dog’s tags.  They weren’t quite sure what to do with the dog after that, so one of them took him into a back room.  I sure hope the owner comes for him – he was a very friendly and well behaved dog.  Strange!  We did not get a picture of the dog, but Randy did get me with a pretty friendly white heron.

By now our cab had come and we caught the 3:30 pm ferry back to our marina.  Below is the ferry bar.  Treasure Cay had been our next planned stop but we decided we had seen what we wanted and changed our itinerary to go to Guana Cay instead.  The wind is supposed to settle down tonight and we feel pretty sure we could get out in the morning.  As usual, the final decision waits until morning when we can check up to the minute conditions.
