We picked up the rental car about 12:30 pm
and drove to Mt. Pleasant where the marina is located. The boat needed provisions, so we stopped at
a Harris Teeter grocery store to stock up.
It was over 90 degrees and sunny but there was a refreshing breeze off
Charleston Harbor as we loaded up a cart and got to the boat
mid-afternoon. Captain Randy had been
thinking about another plumbing project so by 4:00 pm we left again for (where
else?) West Marine for parts. This one
did not have what he was looking for but no worries – there are lots of West
Marine stores in these harbor towns.
By now we were hungry and thirsty and
had noticed a fun-looking place called Shem Creek on the drive to the West
Marine. Both sides of the creek are
lined with boats and bar/restaurants and it was in full swing. We went into Red’s Ice House for a drink and
appetizers. The building was formerly an
ice house supporting the shrimp boats’ catch.
It is now a lively bar and restaurant with boat slips on Shem Creek for
patrons to tie up. There are charter
boats and kayaks and paddle boards for rent at a store across the creek.
The Captain was still thinking about his
plumbing parts and wanted to drive to the West Marine on the other side of
town. No luck there either! We then drove to Isle of Palms and the Acme
Low Country Kitchen for dinner. It was a
popular spot and we had to wait for over an hour for a table. It was well worth it though. We started with local clams, and I had tilefish with Kale and grits and
Captain Randy had whole fried flounder with collard greens and grits. All was delicious. Happy and full, we went
back to the boat ready to start our next leg of the Loop.
