Day 28 - "Crazy Sista"

The day started with the dismantling of the water pump so Captain Randy can figure out how to fix it.  After determining what parts he needs, he called ahead to the Destin West Marine to place the order and have it waiting for us on Friday.

It is still cloudy and cool today, in the 50s.  Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are “beach towns” along the Alabama coastline, not unlike South Haven in western Michigan, but it is not “beach weather” today.  We walked up to the marina office to see about getting a taxi to LuLu’s, Lucy Buffett’s restaurant, for lunch.  They gave us the number, but asked us to wait while they called a couple of other Loopers, avid and Diane Martin.  The Martins had their boat, Magnolia, at the Wharf for the last couple of months because it needed repairs.  They were staying in a condo and had driven their car down from their home in Jackson, MS.  Just to show you how hospitable boaters are, the Martins let the marina office know that they would lend out their car to passing Loopers.  There are a lot of super nice boaters in this world!

Off we go to LuLu’s, about 4 miles away.  We could have gone by boat if it hadn’t been so windy.  What a fun place!  The original LuLu’s was located in Weeks Bay, Lower Alabama.  Due to the loss of her lease, Lucy moved to her current location in Gulf Shores, along the Intracoastal.  Besides LuLu’s main, casual restaurant, there is a newer seafood restaurant, Lucy B Goode, an outdoor stage, and a “Mountain of Youth” – a 3-4 story structure where “kids” can walk across rope ladders and all kinds of other stuff while hanging from a harness.  After lunch, we went into the gift shop where I bought some “Crazy Sista” wear and LuLu’s cookbook that includes great stories about her family and her cooking.

We also stopped at a grocery store for a few supplies.  In addition, Captain Randy has decided that we need a Christmas tree on the boat.  There was a Target close by, so we went in.  I was looking at the 2 foot trees, but of course that will not do for Captain Randy.  He wants the 4 foot lighted tree.  Unfortunately, the store was out of this one.  We are told that the Target in Pensacola has one, so we will try to get it when we are in Pensacola tomorrow and Wednesday.

Back at the Wharf, we did a little shopping and checked out the movie theater.  After a quick dinner on the boat, we went back to the movie theater to see Captain Phillips.  How stressful was his boating experience!!
